The Closing Ceremony

Watching now.  Wow.

It may mean that steampunk and scifi have jumped the shark, to be so thoroughly... I'm not even sure what.  But it's actually quite interesting as a statement of "here's where we are and where we're headed."

As a display for all the former colonies, it's...  something.  Especially the slave ship with Annie Lennox as pirate queen.

Are we that old that it was time for a Spice Girls reunion?  Wow.  Kudos to the planners for finding someone who could really pull off "Walrus" without being precious.

The men's marathon was pretty cool this a.m.  I was hoping for a surprise winner, and Uganda upsetting Kenya with only one American even finishing was definitely that.  Great smile as he cruised towards the finish.  The women's 4x400 relay with a serious new record after past fiascos while the Bahamas took the men's relay, Usain doing his thing like it's easy, the 17 y.o. bringing home gold in the first women's boxing while the U.S. men did not, and Rudisha winning the 800m with a world record were all great viewing...

It almost makes me wish I could run...

U Conn and Baylor tonight

Might be forced to go drink some fancy beer at the neighborhood bar, which has many ESPN feeds...  Ran 7.5 miles this a.m. with a very pully dog, and the idea of watching someone else work out hard while I sit on my butt is appealing.

Interval running

In the sun with a high dewpoint, not so fun.  I think I scared a couple of fit young ladies jogging along with my beet red face.  I'm sure they thought the old broad was crazy, as well as about to keel over.  Just sticking to my schedule.

Why I was doing that is the question I was contemplating as I did my back to back "easy" run this morning, but I survived with only tight calves and aching shins.  And it's kind of fun to show the young 'uns we aren't all so well preserved as in the Lifetime Fitness ads.  Gobs forbid we should try to be athletic.  Athletical?

Plus I saw a possum, crawling out of a hedge by a neighbor's house.  I will trade them an ever-expanding hole full of gophers...

Today we are reading about...

Sporting young ladies.

The heat index is 110°, ruling out anything more than armchair jockism.  The windows were steamed on the outside this morning, the after effect of tons and tons of rain.  Yuck.

And my old refrigerator decided to sure after farmers marketing.

Thankfully I was able to get my long run in before it got too gross,  though this is supposed to last.  I will get my chance to prove my own mettle.  Until then, vicarious soccer goodness.
